The Hunter’s Moon Review: Upscale Countryside Pub Dining on the Fulham Road

A new pub on the Fulham Road you say? It’s about time, because if you don’t live in the area, this borough is surprisingly lacking in quality pubs. They have them, of course – but I’m yet to fall in love with one when it comes to food and it’s a real shame as a local.

Thankfully, all that disappointment is about to change with the arrival of The Hunter’s Moon. A brand new traditional countryside style pub and dining room on the Fulham Road. Outside it’s looking fantastic, but inside its looking even better. Rustic and stylish, but still modern and most importantly – it’s feeling incredibly cosy right now. For those of you wondering about the name, it’s after the orange glowing full moon that appears in the night sky between October and November each year.

In the kitchen and behind the business is Chef Director Oliver Marlowe and Hubert Beatson-Hird who is Owner Director. The joint pair not only own this lovely pub, but the newly formed pub group – Lunar Pub Company. Oliver and Hubert Beatson-Hird (both having worked successfully together at The Sands End in Fulham) aims to expand this new company to more sites in the future, so watch this space! Oliver also comes has a stellar CV and has worked at Michelin starred restaurants such as The Glasshouse and Chez Bruce.

We took our seat in the conservatory area, tucked into some excellent bread and ordered our starters, the first of which to arrive was probably my favourite dish of the night. Burrata with braised leeks, chilli and anchovy dressing. The burrata was as creamy and full flavoured as I’d hoped for, the leeks were lovely and juicy – but the revelation as the chilli and anchovy dressing, Salty, spicy, strong – delicious.

One of my favourite dishes not just here, but of all time is the good old classic steak tartare and the one served here is excellent. The meat they used here was absolutely beautiful I must say and the seasoning was also perfect. Crunchy sourdough crisps, oyster mayonnaise and cured egg yolk – this is one dish you won’t want to miss out on.

For mains, braised featherblade of beef, with onion purée, kale and triple cooked truffle & parmesan chips. Now I forgot to take a photo of the chips (because the other half devoured them within seconds) but I can assure you they were spectacularly crispy and fluffy. As for the featherblade of beef, it was so soft it cut through like butter, had the most amazing rich glaze to it and was complimented by an onion puree which had a lovely smokiness running through it. A really solid offering from the kitchen.

We finished with a couple of desserts and both were an absolute joy to eat. The blackberry and custard pavlova with pink praline crunch was sticky, light, creamy and the perfect way to near the end of our meal. Better still was the treacle tart with Cornish clotted cream. A dish which will no doubt become a signature here because it really was that good.

We had a lovely time at The Hunter’s Moon and I’m so glad because we really needed a local pub to fall in love with. It looks gorgeous inside, the food is great and the service is excellent. We visited this pub just days after it opened and so I can only imagine it’s going to get even better. Would we come back? Absolutely!

NB: My meal was complimentary. All views are as always, my own. My views are not influenced by anyone other than my own palate and slightly poor eyesight.

I’ve been struggling with finding pubs in the area (I’m in Putney) but will definitely check this out! We’ve got favourite local cafes and restaurants but not quite found a pub to fit the bill yet…
