55 Restaurant, Chelsea

Take a stroll around London and the chances are, you’ll find an exceptional restaurant. Some are in plain sight, like the Kutir Restaurant, which we previously reviewed here on The Foodaholic. It is a fine example as it is arguably the best Indian restaurant in London. Others, meanwhile, are sort of hidden, such as 55 Restaurant within the Millennium Copthorne Hotel at Fulham near Stamford Bridge. It is part of Millennium’s trio of casual dining offerings, which also include Frankie’s Sports Bar & Diner and 55 Bar & Lounge.

The 55 Restaurant is a quintessentially British restaurant, one that offers a lighter, more casual, and slightly less comprehensive menu. Think fresh fruit, as well as breakfast staples such as pastry and cold meat. It’s also an excellent spot to have a traditional English breakfast, not to mention other classic British dishes.

But the restaurant’s real showstoppers are its sandwiches, notably The Classic and 7 Hours Pulled Pork. The former is a burger made of premium British beef patty, plum tomato, red onion, iceberg, pickle, and homemade relish all sandwiched in a brioche bun. The latter, on the other hand, is made of succulent pulled pork, red cabbage slaw on glazed brioche, and grilled corn, with a serving of chips.

The 55 Restaurant also offers three-course meals, with one of our favourites being this three-course: tomato and basil soup, grilled fillet of salmon with asparagus and broccoli, and tropical fruit salad. There are other choices, however, that particular three-course gives the best bang for your buck. Besides, the choices are quite limited, which is a bit of a shame, really. But, the meals are very good, and generally within the average budget. Plus, there’s even a diverse selection of wines to choose from, with every one of them reasonably priced.

It’s a great thing then that the 55 Restaurant boasts a laid-back, cosy ambiance that is perfect for relaxing and unwinding, especially after catching a particularly intense football match. The restaurant seems to be a match made in heaven for the fans that head to Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium on match days. The fans know full well that the 55 stands for 1955 — the year when the club won its top-flight title. While the Blues have been up and down this season, they are currently in the top seven in the league table. And bwin suggest Chelsea are expected to qualify for the Champions League this season, although their form has been inconsistent under their new manager Maurizio Sarri. Nevertheless, they have given their fans plenty to cheer about, and just as many reasons to be disappointed. Either way, they know that the 55 Restaurant is just a few steps away from Stamford Bridge; so, win, lose or draw, they have a place to dine. Small wonder then that 55 Restaurant offers match day packages, like the Match Day Residential Package that includes accommodation, tickets, exclusive gifts, and of course, a hearty meal. The Blues Dining Package, on the other hand, offers complementary drinks plus a great meal.

That being said, 55 Restaurant’s close proximity to Stamford Bridge means there’s heavy foot traffic on match days in addition to those staying at the official Chelsea hotel, the Millennium Copthorne. It also means that the restaurant isn’t quite as busy when Chelsea aren’t playing at home. So, if you prefer a more intimate dining experience, schedule your visit to 55 Restaurant during the summer.
