Miramonti Boutique Hotel Review: Alpine Luxury in the South Tyrol Mountains

My long-lost post! OK, well it hasn’t been that long – but when I lost my memory card with months worth of photos on and recently found it hiding under my console table – I couldn’t wait to show you some of what my blog missed! Nestled away within the mountains, Miramonti Boutique Hotel is set at an altitude of 1230 metres and the drive up to it produces some gorgeous views. The most beautiful being the St Kathrein church high up on the hills. It’s like a scene from The Sound of Music.

Park you car, take in that view and climb the stairs to reception. Every step you take in this hotel offers a new view and each one spectacular. Snowy topped mountains, lush green coverings, waterfalls and large towns which look like Lego from this hight. My only tip at this point is definitely don’t hire a Smart Car (something there is a lot of in Italy) for climbing mountains because you may end up going backwards. We learnt from that experience far too often…

Being up in the mountains the weather can take a turn, but thankfully there are lots of seating areas inside the hotel, but all still with floor to ceiling windows to enjoy those views over a glass of wine, game of chess or sinking into your favourite book.

My personal favourite spot to relax was the small terrace just to the left as you enter the hotel. It has the best views down over Merano and for most of the day – completely drenched in sun. There’s also a telescope for spying down on locals.

I’d been planning our trip to this hotel for so long and booking the right room for me was top priority. I wanted something modern, something airy, something with the most amazing views and of course – a hot tub on the terrace. Our room had a nice big plush bed facing out to the mountains and a sofa seating area which separated the shower room. The most important aspect of the room was the open planned design, letting the outside light pour all the way into the room.

My only negative was that the shower rooms here are very exposed and with little, if any privacy. Still, that didn’t bother us too much and the facilities we did have served us very well, with a nice big shower and two hand basins.

The sun was shining, the hot tub on our balcony was steaming, the local wine was perfect and the views looking down over Tyrol were jaw droppingly beautiful. There are so many hotels which have created memories for me over the years and I won’t be forgetting this one. Our best highlight was around 11pm. We jumped in the hot tub in the pitch black, rolled down the canopy and enjoyed watching a storm like nothing we’ve ever seen as the sky filled with lightning bolts.

If Miramonti was to be best known for anything, it’s the incredible spa it offers. World-class and unlike anything else in this region of Italy. This spa is so close to nature and open that you can’t help but feel relaxed no matter where you decide to spend your time. Approximately 1.230 metres above sea level, high above Merano – you can enjoy spa treatments galore, finishing in this magnificent relaxation room which will send you into a sweet slumber.

Outside within the forest you’ll find the amazing sauna on stilts which is imbedded within the rocks and looks down over the mountain. On your way back down a hidden hot tub hides in the trees with nature completely surrounding you. Best yet is the heated infinity pool which quite literally hangs over the mountains. It’s absolutely stunning and it may well be the best outdoor pool I’ve ever seen! Even in the rain.

After a day of walking the mountains in the area, there was nothing better than coming back to the hotel for the complimentary afternoon tea, filled with a selection of home-made pastries, South Tyrolean apple strudel and fruit from the Biokistl. It’s served daily between 2 – 5pm and can be enjoyed inside by the fireplace or on the sun terrace, overlooking those incredible snowy topped mountains.

One thing that really took us by surprise here was the quality off the food and the prices. Of course I live my life for food, but originally we booked this hotel for the views and that hot tub room. The Miramonti Stube restaurant offers classic South Tyrolean cuisine in a wooden chalet setting. Fine dining Panorama Restaurant from head chef Massimo Geromel is the place to be. But our favourite was the more casual Miramonti Klassik.

Still looked after by the same talented chef, Miramonti Klassik is the beating heart of the hotel and during the evening it offers some fantastic, daily changing menu with locally sourced ingredients. Local ham with citrus fruits, perfectly cooked fillets of fish, the most amazing choices of freshly made pasta and desserts to always put a smile on our face. The food here is stunning.

There are so many things close by to Miramonti but given our short stay, we stayed locally and spent our free afternoon at  Schloss Castello Rametz which is both a historic castle and winery in the region. Most importantly it’s just a short 10 minute drive down the hill from the hotel. The winery is open 6 days a week and offers fabulous tastings of its ranges from around 11 euros. A bargain in my opinion for such stunning scenery and delicious, local wines.

If there was ever an award for the most amazing breakfast views then Miramonti would easily win it. Fresh fruits, locally sourced charcuterie, outstanding coffee and even Prosecco. My perfect kind of morning and looking down over the town of Merano which is a spectacular sight. If it’s raining, take a seat inside and watch from the gorgeous setting of the restaurant.

Having planned to stay at this hotel for months, the experience of Miramonti didn’t disappoint at all and was worth every single penny. The incredible hot tub rooms, a spa quite like no other, views to convince you you’re in heaven and delicious local food to make every single night memorable. Would I come back to Miramonti Boutique Hotel? In a heartbeat!
