Mother Restaurant Review: Authentic Italian Pizza Underneath the Iconic Battersea Power Station

I think if there was ever a cuisine us British have adopted as our own – it surely has to be Italian. We all love the freshness & passion which goes into Italian cooking, the endless list of ingredients and with a lot of the cooking being so rich and fulfilling – it’s my ultimate go-to comfort food. I couldn’t think of anything better than a good lasagna or pizza at home on my balcony with a glass of wine in the sun.

Once place we recently found ourselves visiting and just across the pond from my home was Mother in Battersea. Located in the new Battersea Power Station development, Mother is an authentic Italian restaurant serving simple, fuss-free home-cooked food. Inside it looks fantastic, very industrial in style and has lots of outside seating for the warmer months. At the heart of the restaurant is the wood fired oven and on the weekends the tables are filled with everything delicious & Italian as part of their very popular brunch menu.

Mother originally hailed from Copenhagen when it opened in 2010 and still remains ever popular today, best known for their signature sourdough pizza made with sea water. We started our sun drenched lunch here in Battersea with some burrata, sweet oven dried tomatoes & fresh oregano. It was fresh, tasty and exactly the sort of dish we wanted to enjoy with our glass of Italian rose.

Mother says they specialise in wood-fired pizzas and that certainly showed when we dined. Our favourite of them all was the Gorgonzola e’Nduja Pizza. Crisp and golden pizza base, topped with a rich tomato sauce, mozzarella, gorgonzola & spicy soft salame. The base was cooked well, the spice from the nduja was just right and the cheese was oozing onto the plate.

My dining companion really enjoyed their Prosciutto Pizza and visually it looked fantastic, though sadly I didn’t manage a bite (greedy them). It was topped with more of that rich tomato sauce, mozzarella, Prosciutto di Norcia, rucola and pesto. I watched them cutting the prosciutto in the kitchen and it looked incredibly fresh so perhaps next time I’ll have to sample their antipasti offering or better yet their brunch which offers lots of freshly slice ham.

We didn’t quite manage dessert, but we left feeling full and satisfied. If I’m being completely honest I’ve had better pizzas in London over the years, yes – but probably not in Battersea which makes Mother rather attractive for locals and people visiting the area. The service was attentive and friendly, the food was wholesome and the location is somewhere you’d want to spend all afternoon, sitting in the sun or inside cozied up close to that pizza oven during the Winter.

NB: Our meal was complimentary. All views are as always, my own. My views are not influenced by anyone other than my own palate and slightly poor eyesight.

This looks and sounds really tasty. Love a good home cooked pizza and an authentic burrata. I can imagine they need outdoor seating the summer because it must get really hot indoors. That pizza with the prosciutto 😍
