REVIEW: The Butcher & Grill, Parkgate Road, Battersea, London

I should probably just get the apologies out of the way now because this review is pure & utter food porn. It’s full of meat, calories, chocolate, wine and everything else bad (good) in-between – even after a week or two since dining here the effects are still sitting on my hips. Thankfully the extra weight and one step closer to a heart attack was well worth it after I made the trip across the bridge to my local, The Butcher & Grill.

I’d visited this local neighborhood gem once before in the past, one early morning for breakfast, but never did I realise they served food as exciting as this. With a butchers & deli area at the front of this venue, the restaurant side of things is a little bit hidden and if I’m honest I never quite trust a place with a deli, expecting too much overpriced organic and gluten products – yet The Butcher & Grill is anything but, with a talented head chef who knows his way behind a grill. To kick off our meaty expedition we started with some fantastic bread & delicious burnt onion butter – thick rounds of pork scratchings even made an appearance. Things continued on a high as we tucked into a fresh and zesty Brixham crab cocktail with baby gem, avocado and tomato jelly, however the home cured bresaola, celeriac remoulade, hazelnuts and parsley stole the show – full of flavour and textures which worked wonders on the palate.

You’d have thought we’d have been full by this point, and we were – but that didn’t stop us tucking into our huge grilled salmon steaks with kohlrabi, fennel, pink grapefruit and pomegranate. It’s dishes like these which I didn’t even know The Butcher & Grill served. Fish was the last thing I expected for whatever reason, yet they do it so well. One or two bones got in my way, but with salmon cooked this good on a bed of zesty and crunchy fruits & vegetables I didn’t care. A side of tenderstem broccoli was a welcome addition and cooked the right side of crunchy.

A visit to The Butcher & Grill will result in some serious meat action, so be prepared. Veggies – look away now. We dined as part of a group and while the sheer quantity for just the six of us was completely unnecessary, I had absolutely no complaints. Our beef tasting plate was on epic, gargantuan proportions, piled high with B&G Sliders, BBQ Short ribs and stout braised ox cheek which quite literally fell apart at the touch of my fork. The best part of our platter however was that grilled rib on the bone. Succulent, juicy, full of flavour, seasoned to perfection and with a lovely dark bark to the fat. I loved the selection of sides too, especially the sweet potato.

As I said before, the kitchen has a keen eye for desserts here. They’re not only full of flavour, but they’re playful and they make you talk. We were prodding and poking trying to work out just how they managed to put it all together. My personal favourite was the chocolate soil pots, stuffed with more chocolate than you could imagine, chocolate mouse, chocolate soil (crumble) and everything else in between. Cardamom rice pudding with honeycomb, rhubarb and lemon curd for me needed a little work – the texture of the rice was a bit thick. Oreo cheesecake was more like a cake, rather than an actual cheesecake – but it was still rather delicious. They could box these beauties and sell them in the deli.

The Butcher & Grill has been a staple in Battersea for some time now and all I can say is sorry I never came sooner because it’s a great space. It may look a little unassuming and rustic on the outside, but delve into the back of this restaurant and discover the elevated dining room – a place you won’t want to leave. The service is fantastic, the food is exciting and the kitchen pay such attention to detail. There is also still lots of room here for the team and the food to evolve which I look forward to exploring. If you’re looking for a meaty meal to never forget then this is for you and you’ll be surprised just how affordable it really is – especially if you visit on one of the half price steak Monday’s. I know I will be.
